If you have a residence permit and wish to continue living in Sweden after your permit has expired, you should apply to extend your residence permit. It is important that you submit your application for an extension before your current residence permit expires, but no earlier than 30 days before. If you have previously been an asylum seeker and have been granted a temporary residence permit, an application for an extension is required if you wish to stay in Sweden.
An extended residence permit can be granted if you
meet any of the following criteria:
- You need protection (asylum).
- You are a family member of a person residing in Sweden.
- You want to look for work after completing your secondary education.
- You have studied at secondary level and can support yourself.
- There are particularly harsh circumstances.
For those wishing to extend a residence permit to live with someone in Sweden, the following requirements must
be met:
- You must have a valid passport.
- You and your partner, or other family member with whom you were first granted a residence permit to live, intend to continue living together in Sweden. Please note that if your relationship has ended, you can in some cases still apply for an extension of your residence permit.
